California Fisheries CoalitionThe California Fisheries Coalition is a partnership of commercial and recreational fishing organizations preserving fishing access for all and securing strong local businesses. We have been engaged in the Marine Protected Areas initiative from the beginning providing a voice for the entire fishing community, focused on ensuring good science, complete economic analyses, and equitable policies that don’t single out or over regulate legitimate commercial and recreational fishing activities and related small businesses.

We prepared a fisherman’s network alternative for the central coast that fully met the expectation and goals of state law; we compiled a scientific report that provided guidance in making sure the conservation value of fishing regulations was recognized; we had experts critique the socio-economic analysis that supported the central coast MPAs; and we compiled detailed comments on environmental review documents.

We represented the entire fishing community. We didn’t pick and chose which fishing is worth saving - MPA debates are not the place for that.

But most importantly, we learned that MPAs are being established on the basis of political science rather than marine science or economics. We need to remain diligent as the MPA process moves into other areas of the coast.
